If you’re like a lot of parents, just the mention of school supplies phrase can make you panic, reminding you of the maddening crowds and huge credit card bills that make the annual August stock-up almost unbearable. With schools getting back in session during the months of August, your children summer respite is about to come to an end. Soon, your grown-up children will be buckling down and studying in an attempt to conduct an important research project, term paper, or prepare for midterm exams. They are one step closer to realizing their goal of obtaining a degree.

Of course, before they head back to school, they will have to take the inventory of what they need to bring with them. If they are a returning student, they will need to update their education supplies, but if they are a new college student, they will have to start from scratch. With careful planning, you can save hundreds of dollars on supplies this academic year.

Give Them a Budget

Your children can be resistant to reusing last year education supplies or older clothes. Maybe they are hankering for a fancy new supplies that everyone has this year. If this attitude is hampering your efforts to save money on school supplies, give them a budget. Tell them that you will spend a certain amount on an item, if they want an upgrade they’ll need to chip in. Or perhaps let your children choose which items to reuse and which to buy new.

Online Merchants

Online supply stores want your business. In some cases you’ll get free shipping on your discounted order, especially if you hit a certain spending threshold. Otherwise, you should still receive discounted shipping avoiding the need to head to the mall or to your retail outlet. These days, many parents are hitting online supply stores in a bid to save money.

Shops for essential first, trends second

It’s a common scenario: Once your child sees what his friends are bringing, the supply they loved in August seems lame. Children can be fickle; a few weeks into the school year, when peer pressure kicks in, they’re bound to come home with a list of must-haves. So buy just the essentials at the beginning of the season rather than everything at once; remember, there’s always going to be another sale. Create a file that includes catalogs, sizes and wish lists so you can act if you find a sale while on your own.

You are paying plenty of money to get your child education. Saving money on classroom supplies is not only wise, but a simple task to do. Use your internet connection to search for bargains everywhere. With these simple tips, you’ll keep from keeping out your patience and your credit cards.
